- I. Hello from Virtus
- Virtus' Hexmaker software provides everything you need to create
- and edit 3-D levels for Hexen II(TM) without building anything from scratch!
-
- This fast, easy 3-D level-building program features a drag-and-drop
- WYSIWYG approach: You drag templates and basic 3-D shapes
- from galleries and drop them into the Design Window.
-
- To construct complex multilevel rooms and interconnecting corridors,
- you combine templates and basic 3-D shapes. Then, you edit the room
- templates and shapes and sizes, and add surface features such as
- windows and doorways. After that, you drop in textures to create the
- Hexen II unique look. Then you can drag and drop artifacts, weapons,
- health, and bad guys from the 3-D galleries and add them anywhere in
- your new Hexen II level. Additions and changes immediately appear in
- the Walk Window, which lets you explore your level.
-
- Hexmaker features space in which to design your Hexen II worlds,
- a set of editing tools, and multiple navigation techniques.
-
- Also included are galleries of 2-D surface features, textures, 3-D shapes,
- and Hexen II objects, all of which you can add to your Hexen II worlds.
- Hexmaker also provides several pre-built Hexen II template levels that illustrate
- the program's level making, texture mapping, and walk-through capabilities.

-
- IV. Things You Need to Know
- A. Outstanding Issues
-
- B. Tips and Tricks
- 1. To Increase Hexmaker Processing Speed: While you are creating
- your levels, reduce/minimize the size of your Walk Window.
-
- 2. HTML Version of Textures: An HTML preview of the textures in the .wad file
- is available. Use your HTML browser to call up index.htm from the
- 'textures\HTML Pages' directory to see what the textures look like.
-
- 3. Moving multiple selected objects breaks any connections between rooms you have.
- To avoid this problem, group the selection then move and ungroup.
-
- 4. Avoid compiling when you have little available disk space, this includes from disks.
- The Hexen II compilers create many temporary files and take up lots of
- disk space while compiling. The compilers are not set up to detect when
- you run out of disk space and they will not terminate.
-
- 5. The fit to face option for textures assumes one orientation for textures.
- If you wish to have a texture face a specific direction use the surface
- properties screen to manually edit the texture coordinates.
-
- 6. Due to memory limitations, there is a maximum number of textures that can
- be loaded into Hexmaker that is set by your machine's available memory.
- Keep only the textures you are working with open in the texture gallery. Do
- not try to load all of the textures in the .wad file at once. You will only get
- some of them and you will be too low on memory to edit.
-
- 7. Sometimes using the skew tool will cause leaks when a skewed side is connected
- to an object with a transparent surface feature.
-
- 8. Undo does not re-connect objects.
-
- 9. In the Quick Start Guide, drag a Small Spider into the level instead of a Rat.
-
- 10. If you attempt to export an empty model, the compilers will cause an error.
- Hexmaker can not catch all errors that happen in the compilers because the compiler
- code is not ours and we do not support it.
-
-
- C. Documentation
- The on-line help file documents the features of Hexmaker. For more information
- on editing and on the specific items you can use from the Hexen II game see
- the Hexen Code Comments.txt file installed with the product. These comments
- document the use of most of the class items Hexmaker allows you to use.
